Even spirituality can become an expression of this same search. We may spend years trying to ascend, awaken, heal, manifest, purify or become worthy enough to finally reach the Divine.
Yet beneath all of these efforts can remain one unquestioned assumption:
I am here. God is somewhere else. And somehow I must bridge the distance between us.

For many people, however, the illusion of separation is reinforced by something even deeper: a distorted internal image of God.
Long before we consciously questioned who or what the Divine is, we may have absorbed ideas about God from religion, family, culture, authority figures, spiritual teachings and our own experiences of suffering.
God may unconsciously have become an external authority who observes, judges, rewards and punishes. A God who approves or disapproves. A God whose love must be earned. A God who sometimes provides and sometimes withholds. A God who demands sacrifice. A God who decides whether we deserve abundance, love, healing or fulfillment.
For others, God may unconsciously carry the characteristics of a parent or authority figure: unpredictable, demanding, emotionally unavailable, controlling or impossible to please.
These images can remain active even when our conscious spiritual beliefs have changed.
Someone may intellectually believe that God is unconditional love while their deeper emotional system still expects judgment. They may consciously believe in abundance while subconsciously associating spirituality with deprivation and sacrifice. They may speak about Divine guidance while simultaneously fearing that surrender means losing autonomy. They may affirm that God is within while continuing to pray to an external power that they hope will eventually intervene and rescue them.
This creates an internal contradiction.
We cannot completely surrender to a Divine Presence that some part of us still experiences as dangerous. We cannot completely receive from a Source we believe may withhold. And we cannot fully realize unity while maintaining an internal God-image built upon separation.

We begin distinguishing Divine Reality from human projection.

The Divine is no longer approached primarily as an external being that must be persuaded to improve our human circumstances. Prayer gradually moves from “God, change this for me” toward “Let me become completely available to the Divine Intelligence that can express through me.”
Spirituality moves from asking the Divine to work for us toward allowing the Divine to work through us.
The individual ceases to experience themselves merely as someone seeking Divine intervention and increasingly recognizes themselves as an instrument and channel through which Divine Intelligence can enter expression.
This also means that the quality of the channel matters.
Unresolved wounds, fear, inherited conditioning, scarcity consciousness, shame, unconscious patterns, distorted identities and internal fragmentation can influence what we perceive, receive and express. The work of transformation therefore becomes more than self-improvement.
